Twilight Portico Ascent to San Luca Sanctuary
Climbing the world's longest continuous portico at dusk lets you beat the daytime heat, watch the lights illuminate 666 historic arches, and witness a sweeping sunset over Bologna from Colle della Guardia.
Overview
Embark on a scenic uphill walk along the UNESCO-listed Portico di San Luca, an architectural feat built between 1674 and 1793. Stretching nearly 3.8 kilometers with exactly 666 vaulted arches and 15 roadside chapels, the arcade connects the historic city gate to the hilltop Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca. Starting in the late afternoon allows you to enjoy shaded climbing, atmospheric lighting under the arcades, and panoramic views of the Bolognese hills as the sun sets.
Step-by-step Plan
- Late Afternoon (17:30 – 18:00): Begin your walk at Porta Saragozza. Follow the flat stretch of porticoes along Via Saragozza until you reach the ornate Baroque archway, Arco del Meloncello.
- The Ascent (18:00 – 19:00): Cross beneath the Meloncello arch, where the climb officially begins. Follow the 2-kilometer uphill slope over approximately 489 steps, taking occasional breaks at the arched lookout points to view the surrounding countryside.
- Sanctuary & Sunset (19:00 – 19:45): Reach the summit of Colle della Guardia. Admire the exterior of the 18th-century Baroque basilica and explore the terraces overlooking the Apennine foothills as dusk sets in.
- Descent & Refreshment (19:45 – 20:30): Walk back down through the illuminated arcade toward Meloncello, or continue into the city for an evening aperitivo.
Reservations & Hours
- Portico Access: The covered walkway is a public pedestrian route open 24 hours a day, year-round, with free access.
- Basilica of San Luca: Generally open daily from 07:00 to 18:30 (until 19:00 from March through October). Admission to the sanctuary interior is free, with modest dress required.
- San Luca Sky Experience (Panoramic Dome Terrace): Accessible via ticket (around €5), subject to seasonal opening schedules.
What to Bring
- Comfortable walking or running shoes with good grip (the cobblestone and brick inclines can be slick).
- Refillable water bottle (public drinking fountains are located along the route and at the top).
- Light layers or a windbreaker, as hill breezes pick up after sundown.
- Small headlamp or fully charged smartphone for poorly lit corners of the descent.
Budget
- Walking the Portico: Free.
- Sanctuary Entry: Free.
- Optional Dome Ascent (San Luca Sky Experience): €5 per person.
- Optional Transit Alternative (Bus 58 or San Luca Express): €1.50–€15 depending on whether you take local city transit or the tourist mini-train.
Tips & Accessibility
- The climb is moderately strenuous, gaining roughly 270 meters of elevation in under two kilometers. Take a steady pace and rest at the landing bays.
- Accessibility: The portico includes numerous stairs and steep gradients, making the pedestrian ascent unsuitable for manual wheelchairs or travelers with severe mobility limitations. Visitors with limited mobility can reach the sanctuary top via public bus (Line 58 from Villa Spada) or the San Luca Express mini-train from Piazza Maggiore.
Backup Plan
If heavy rain or storms make the ascent unappealing, take the covered tourist mini-train (San Luca Express) directly from central Piazza Maggiore up to the sanctuary summit, or explore the flat UNESCO porticoes around Piazza Santo Stefano and the MAMbo museum in the city center instead.
