Botanical Sketching & Pigment Foraging

Overview

Embark on a mindful creative expedition through one of Mexico's most vibrant living plant sanctuaries. In this workshop-style outing, you explore living collections of desert succulents, volcanic rock flora, and subtropical flora. Along the paths, collect exclusively fallen petals, seed husks, dried leaves, and mineral-rich volcanic soil to grind into spontaneous natural pigments. Once mixed with water and a binder, you use your fresh, earth-derived palette to sketch and paint the striking botanicals around you.

Step-by-step Plan (numbered, rough timing)

1. Morning (09:30 AM – 10:30 AM): Arrive at the UNAM Botanical Garden inside Ciudad Universitaria. Begin with a gentle walking survey through the outdoor arid zone and greenhouse collections to observe leaf structures, textures, and native cacti.
2. Late Morning (10:30 AM – 11:30 AM): Forage respectfully for loose material strictly from paths and ground surfaces (never pick living specimens). Gather fallen bougainvillea bracts, dry marigold heads, fallen bark, eucalyptus leaves, or pinch bits of dark volcanic dirt.
3. Noon (11:30 AM – 12:30 PM): Set up on a shaded stone bench. Use a small travel mortar and pestle or smooth stones to crush your gathered organic materials into fine powders. Add droplets of clean water and a drop of gum arabic or honey to blend raw watercolor washes.
4. Early Afternoon (12:30 PM – 02:00 PM): Open your sketchbook. Use a pencil or waterproof fineliner to draw botanical studies of nearby agaves or native ferns, then paint them in using your hand-foraged pigments.
5. Wrap-up (02:00 PM – 02:30 PM): Swatch your new pigment catalog into a field reference page, label each color with its plant or mineral source, and pack up all materials cleanly.

What to Bring

• Heavyweight watercolor sketchbook (cold-press, at least 300 gsm recommended)
• Travel watercolor brushes and water brush pens
• Small ceramic travel mortar and pestle or mini spice grinder (or a pocket mixing tin)
• Dropper bottle with clean water
• Small container of liquid gum arabic, honey, or egg white (acts as natural paint binder)
• Reusable cloth pouches or envelopes for collecting dry fallen material
• Sun protection (wide-brim hat, sunscreen) and plenty of drinking water

Tips & Accessibility

• Ethical Gathering: Do not cut, tear, or pull leaves or petals from live plants in the botanical garden. Only collect materials already shed on the ground or paths.
• Accessibility: The UNAM Botanical Garden features paved main paths, though some succulent trails run over uneven volcanic basalt stone (pedregal). Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential.

Backup Plan

If sudden afternoon rain arrives, move under the covered pavilion structures or into the nearby university campus cafes. You can complete your sketches and pigment tests indoors using reference photographs taken during your morning walk.
