Canal Kayaking Expedition
Kayaking down the unique canals of Utrecht offers a thrilling perspective from water level, letting you paddle right past historic double-level wharves, centuries-old cellars, and under medieval stone bridges that you can't experience anywhere else in the world.
Overview
Embark on a classic Dutch adventure by paddling your way through the historic, split-level canals of Utrecht. Unlike Amsterdam, Utrecht is famous for its unique wharf system ('werfkelders') where cellars open up directly to the water level, now bustling with lively cafes, terraces, and hidden gardens. Renting a kayak allows you to dodge the larger tour boats, explore narrow side canals, navigate the peaceful outer moat, and see the medieval city center from an entirely fresh, active angle.
Step-by-step Plan
- Arrive at the Launch Point (15 mins): Head down to the historic wharf at Oudegracht 275. Meet the team at Kanoverhuur Utrecht, check in, secure your belongings in a dry bag, and receive your paddle and water map.
- Launch into the Canal (15 mins): Get situated in your single or double kayak. Prepare for a uniquely fun launch—the staff often slide you right off the wooden rollers into the canal water.
- Explore the Oudegracht (1 hour): Paddle through the heart of the city. Navigate under low-hanging stone arches and past bustling canal-side dining terraces. Keep an eye out for Utrecht's iconic Dom Tower rising high above the buildings.
- The Outer Moat Loop (1 hour): Guide your kayak out of the central Oudegracht into the outer ring canal (Stadsbuitengracht). Here, the setting changes into a lush, green, park-like environment where you can paddle past historic fortresses and under leafy weeping willows.
- Return and Dock (30 mins): Paddle back into the central canal system, navigating back to Oudegracht 275. Return your gear, dry off, and grab a well-deserved treat at a nearby wharf-side cafe.

- Accessibility: Getting into and out of low-profile kayaks from the wharf requires basic mobility and a short step down. Staff are available to assist with stability.
Backup Plan
If a sudden rainstorm strikes, swap the open-air kayak for a covered historic boat tour operated by Rederij Schuttevaer at Oudegracht 85, or duck into one of the cozy subterranean wharf restaurants for a warm plate of Dutch pancakes and craft beer.
