Overview

Commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII and masterminded by the Dominican friar and mathematician Ignazio Danti between 1580 and 1583, the Gallery of the Geographical Maps (Galleria delle Carte Geografiche) spans 120 meters of pure Renaissance cartography. Lined with 40 massive wall frescoes representing Italian regions and island territories—with the Apennines acting as the dividing corridor—this hall bridges rigorous scientific topography with dazzling Mannerist art.

Step-by-step Plan

08:15 – Arrival & Security: Arrive at the Vatican Museums entrance on Viale Vaticano with your pre-booked mobile or printed entry ticket and passport/photo ID to pass through the priority security checkpoint.
08:45 – Route to the Upper Galleries: Walk through the Cortile della Pigna and wind through the Pio-Clementino Museum and Gallery of the Candelabra before entering the start of the map gallery corridor.
09:15 – The Geographic Walkthrough: Take your time traversing the 120-meter corridor. Notice how the Tyrrhenian side of Italy rests on one wall while the Adriatic side lies on the other. Look up to spot regional miraculous events aligned specifically to the maps below.
10:00 – Onward to the Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's: Continue through the Raphael Rooms and conclude at the Sistine Chapel before exiting.

Reservations & Hours

Hours: Open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00 (last entry at 18:00). Open the last Sunday of each month from 09:00 to 14:00 (last entry at 12:30). Closed on most other Sundays.
Reservations: Advance booking via the official Vatican Museums portal is mandatory to avoid multi-hour queues.
