Go on a Megalithic Site Tour in Alentejo

cultural📍 Évora, Alentejo, Portugal

The Évora district is home to some of Europe's oldest and most impressive Neolithic monuments—predating Stonehenge by roughly two millennia—nestled amidst tranquil cork oak forests without heavy tourist barricades.

Overview

The Alentejo plains around Évora harbor one of the densest and most significant concentrations of prehistoric stone monuments in the Iberian Peninsula. This self-guided road circuit lets you explore enigmatic stone circles, towering solitary menhirs, and monumental passage graves in their natural rural landscape.

Step-by-step Plan (rough timing)

  1. 09:00 AM – Center Megalithica Ebora (Guadalupe): Start at the interpretation center in the village of Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe to view informative panels and learn how Neolithic farming communities lived and aligned these structures.
  2. 10:00 AM – Menir dos Almendres: Drive 5 minutes down the rural lane to see this solitary 4-meter-tall granite menhir standing among ancient olive trees.
  3. 10:45 AM – Cromeleque dos Almendres: Follow the dirt path another 1.5 km to the main site. Walk freely among the 95 standing monoliths arranged in twin ellipses, noting the subtle geometric carvings on select stones.
  4. 12:30 PM – Lunch Break in Valverde or Évora: Head to a nearby village or back to Évora's historical center for traditional Alentejo fare like migas or pork with clams.
  5. 02:30 PM – Anta Grande do Zambujeiro & Anta-Capela de São Brissos: Travel southwest toward Valverde to view one of the largest burial chambers (dolmens) in Europe, then finish with a stop at São Brissos, an intriguing 17th-century Christian chapel built directly into a prehistoric dolmen.

  • Reservations: None required for independent visits.

What to Bring

  • Sturdy walking shoes or trail runners (dirt tracks and uneven gravel terrain).
  • Sun protection: wide-brim hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen (little to no shade at monuments).
  • Plenty of drinking water (no running water facilities at the monuments).
  • Offline GPS map downloaded to your phone (mobile signal can be spotty along back roads).

Budget

  • Site Admissions: Free (€0)
  • Ebora Megalithica Center: Free admission (€0)
  • Fuel / Rental Car: Approx. €10–€20 in fuel for the rural circuit
  • Lunch in Évora / Valverde: €15–€25 per person

Tips & Accessibility

  • The last 3 km toward Almendres is an unpaved gravel road; drive slowly to navigate corrugations, especially after heavy rains.
  • Summer temperatures regularly exceed 38°C (100°F); visit early in the morning during July and August.
  • Accessibility: The sites involve walking over unpaved dirt, loose gravel, and grass, making them generally unsuitable for standard wheelchairs and low-clearance mobility devices.

Backup Plan

If high midday heat or rain makes outdoor exploration uncomfortable, redirect to the Museu de Évora (Frei Manuel do Cenáculo National Museum) in central Évora to view archaeological finds and Neolithic artifacts excavated from these very sites, followed by an indoor visit to the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones).
