Bo Sang Village, located just outside Chiang Mai city in San Kamphaeng, has preserved the centuries-old Lanna tradition of handmade umbrella crafting. At the Bo Sang Umbrella Making Centre, artisans demonstrate every phase of the process: beating the bark of the Saa (paper mulberry) tree into fibrous pulp, carving flexible bamboo frames, stretching the dried sheets, and painting bright scenes using waterproof mineral paints. Visitors can join a walk-in workshop to design and hand-paint their own paper or cotton parasol, fan, or even canvas tote under the guidance of resident painters.

Step-by-step Plan

2. 9:30 AM – Factory Walkthrough: Tour the open-air covered pavilion. Observe artisans slicing bamboo ribs, dipping Saa paper into vats, and assembling umbrellas without a single mechanical part.
3. 10:15 AM – Choose Your Canvas & Workshop Station: Select the size and material of your blank umbrella (small paper parasol, large cotton umbrella, or folding handheld fan) and claim a painting station.
4. 10:30 AM – Paint Your Masterpiece: Sketch your design with chalk or pencil, then use vibrant acrylic and oil-based pigments to paint floral sprays, elephants, or abstract geometric patterns. Resident artists will readily give pointers on traditional brushwork.
5. 11:30 AM – Drying & Finishing: Set your painted umbrella on the outdoor drying racks in the sun while you browse the village showroom or nearby Saa paper craft shops.
6. 12:00 PM – Local Lunch: Enjoy a bowl of Khao Soi or local northern Thai noodles at one of the small open-air eateries along Bo Sang's main street before heading back.
