Late Evening Moroccan Calligraphy Workshop
Immerse yourself in the meditative rhythm of traditional Maghrebi script inside a tranquil riad courtyard, escaping daytime bustle for a focused, hands-on artistic evening.
Overview
Spend an evocative evening mastering the fluid geometry of traditional Arabic and Maghrebi calligraphy. Under the soft lantern light of an artisan studio or riad salon, a master calligrapher guides you through preparing a traditional reed pen (qalam), mixing natural soot inks, and understanding the sacred balance of letterforms. It is a calming, tactile experience that transforms centuries-old visual culture into a personal creative practice.
Step-by-step Plan
- 7:30 PM – Arrival and Welcome: Settle into the studio space with a fresh glass of mint tea or spiced herbal infusion while the master calligrapher introduces the history and distinct curves of Maghrebi and Andalusian scripts.
- 8:00 PM – Tools & Technique: Learn how to bevel and maintain the dried reed pen (qalam), prepare handmade paper, and grip the instrument to regulate ink flow.
- 8:30 PM – Fundamental Strokes: Practice basic geometric units, proportions, and foundational Arabic letterforms, focusing on breath and steady hand posture.
- 9:15 PM – Final Composition: Compose a customized word, personal name, or poetic phrase onto heavy art paper or illuminated parchment.
- 9:45 PM – Review & Drying: Mount your completed piece in a protective sleeve and discuss continuing calligraphy practice independently.
What to Bring
- Dark or ink-tolerant clothing (natural inks can stain).
- Reading glasses if you require magnification for fine detail.
- A flat folder or rigid portfolio case to transport your finished artwork safely.
- Cash to purchase custom calligraphy pens or ink pots if desired.
Budget
- Evening workshop fee (instruction and base materials): 350–600 MAD per person.
- Optional take-home artisan calligraphy kit (carved pens, inkwell, special paper): 100–200 MAD.
- Light refreshments: typically included in private/small-group studio sessions.
Tips & Accessibility
- Accessibility: Most studio sessions are seated at standard tables or low traditional couches; if floor seating or low benches are difficult, request standard table seating when booking.
- Language: Workshops are widely conducted in English, French, and Moroccan Arabic.
- No Prior Experience Needed: You do not need to read, write, or speak Arabic; the focus is on visual geometry, stroke weight, and artistic balance.
Backup Plan
If a live in-person artisan workshop is fully booked, set up a self-guided evening session: visit an art supply vendor or souk stationer earlier in the day to purchase a carved bamboo qalam, black walnut or soot ink, and smooth drafting paper, then follow a structured Maghrebi calligraphy tutorial video in your accommodation lounge.
