Learn Traditional Dutch Baking

food & drink📍 Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands

This hands-on experience lets you master the art of crafting the Netherlands' most iconic sweet treat—the stroopwafel—right in the vibrant neighborhood where street food culture thrives.

Overview

Instead of just eating your way through the Netherlands, step behind the counter to learn the delicate craft of traditional stroopwafel making. Guided by an expert local baker, you will dive into the history of this 18th-century delicacy, mix and roll your own dough, press it on a classic hot iron, and slice it warm to fill with gooey caramel syrup. It is a sweet, interactive, and highly rewarding way to connect with Dutch culinary heritage.

Step-by-step Plan (numbered, rough timing)

  1. Arrival & Introduction (10 minutes): Gather at the cozy workshop space located in De Pijp, right off the famous outdoor market. Meet your instructor, put on your apron, and learn about the origins of the stroopwafel.
  2. Dough & Iron Prep (15 minutes): Get hands-on by weighing, mixing, and rolling out the dough into perfect portions. Watch a live demonstration of the iron-pressing technique to understand how to get that perfect golden, crispy texture.
  3. Baking, Slicing & Filling (15 minutes): Take your turn at the hot cast-iron waffle press. Once baked, learn the challenging local technique of slicing the thin waffle horizontally while it is steaming hot, then generously smothering the inside with warm, spiced caramel syrup.
  4. Tasting & Wrapping Up (5 minutes): Take a moment to enjoy one of your freshly made XL stroopwafels alongside a cup of Dutch coffee, tea, or water. Pack up your second creation to take home, collect your official baking certificate, and grab a recipe card to recreate the magic in your own kitchen.

What to Bring

  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes: You will be standing near warm baking stations and working with hot waffle irons.
  • Hair tie: To keep hair back while working with food.
  • An appetite: You will definitely want to enjoy your warm creations on the spot.

Budget

  • Workshop Ticket: €19.00 to €24.50 per person (depending on the time slot and day of the week). Includes all ingredients, apron, professional instruction, two XL stroopwafels, a hot beverage, and a recipe card.

Tips & Accessibility

  • Booking: Highly recommended to reserve a spot online a few days in advance, as these cozy, intimate sessions cap out at around 12 to 20 participants and sell out quickly.
  • Dietary Needs: The standard recipe contains gluten, dairy, and eggs. Reach out to the hosts in advance if you have specific dietary restrictions, though note they operate in a facility handling common allergens.
  • Accessibility: The venue is ground-floor and accessible, but please inform the organizers ahead of time if you have specific mobility requirements so they can optimize the baking station setup.

Backup Plan

If the workshop is fully booked, head outside to browse the Albert Cuyp Market and purchase a fresh, warm stroopwafel from one of the market's legendary street stalls, then stop by a nearby Dutch design shop to pick up a classic cast-iron waffle maker of your own to practice at home.
