Step-by-step Plan

1. 9:00 PM - Scout your vantage point: Walk around a well-illuminated historic square or monument (such as a cathedral plaza or historic town hall). Look for a comfortable bench or café terrace with direct sightlines and decent street lighting.
2. 9:30 PM - Set up and tone your page: Find your seat, clip on a small book light if needed, and lay down initial background washes or loose contour pencil lines to map out scale and perspective.
3. 10:00 PM - Focus on light and contrast: Use ink pens, graphite, or gouache to capture the dramatic contrast between warm artificial lanterns, cool moonlight, and deep architectural shadows.
4. 11:00 PM - Details and highlights: Add crisp foreground linework and use a white gel pen or opaque white gouache to bring out lamplight reflections and moonlit edges.
5. 11:30 PM - Late night tapas wind-down: Pack up your gear and head into a nearby neighborhood bar to review your sketches over a cold drink and a couple of late-night pinchos.
