Mount Stella Stargazing Retreat
Rising high above the surrounding urban landscape in the QT8 district, Mount Stella offers an open summit panorama where you can watch the sunset melt into twilight and spot bright constellations above the shimmering cityscape.
Overview
Escape the rush of the city with an evening picnic and skywatching session atop Mount Stella (known locally as Montagnetta di San Siro). Built from post-war rubble and now blanketed in lush greenery, this iconic 45-meter artificial hill features winding walking paths that lead up to 360-degree views across the skyline and out toward the Alps on crisp evenings.
Step-by-step Plan
- Late Afternoon Arrival (18:30 – 19:15): Take metro line M1 (Red Line) to QT8 station. Walk a couple of minutes to the base of the park and take a leisurely stroll through the shaded trails, passing the Garden of the Righteous (Giardino dei Giusti).
- Summit Ascent & Picnic Setup (19:15 – 20:00): Hike up along the paved spiral paths to the summit terrace. Spread out a blanket on the grassy slopes facing west to catch the golden hour over the horizon.
- Skywatching & City Lights (20:00 – 21:30): As dusk deepens, use a sky-mapping app or binoculars to track visible planets (such as Venus, Jupiter, or Mars depending on the season) and major constellations like Ursa Major and Cassiopeia appearing above the city lights.
- Evening Descent (21:30 – 22:00): Pack up all trash, switch on a small flashlight or phone light for safety, and take the main path back down to QT8 station.
Reservations & Hours
- Opening Hours: Open 24/7 with free public access daily.
- Reservations: None needed; access is completely free and unmetered.

Budget
- Park Admission: €0 (Free)
- Public Transit (Metro M1 ordinary ticket): ~€2.20 per journey (€4.40 round-trip)

Tips & Accessibility
- The main spiral routes winding to the top are paved and have a gradual incline, making them accessible to sturdy strollers and wheelchairs, though some grassy shortcuts are steep and uneven.
- To optimize stargazing in an urban environment, turn your back toward the bright downtown high-rises and focus your gaze upward into the zenith or toward the darker horizons to the west and north.
Backup Plan
If thick clouds or rain roll in, book an evening show at the Ulrico Hoepli Planetarium inside the Indro Montanelli Public Gardens, where you can admire projected star fields and celestial lectures indoors.
