Outdoor Urban Bouldering Challenge
The Helsinki area is globally famous for its dense concentration of premium granite boulders tucked directly inside urban parks and coastal greenways, letting you tackle world-class rock problems within city limits.
Overview
Embark on a self-guided outdoor bouldering circuit exploring the rugged granite crags nestled inside Helsinki's urban parks. Spots like Meilahti, Taivaskallio, and Koivusaari feature problems ranging from accessible low-ball slabs to technical crimp lines, all accessible by public transit. Grab a crash pad, navigate routes via the 27 Crags app, and spend the afternoon testing your grip strength on genuine Nordic bedrock.
Step-by-step Plan
- Gear Pickup & Briefing (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM): Rent a crash pad from a local climbing gym (such as Boulderkeskus Pasila or Konala) and download your target topo on the 27 Crags app.
- Transit to the First Sector (11:00 AM – 11:30 AM): Take the tram or bus to Meilahti park or Koivusaari, where granite boulders sit right beside coastal trails.
- Warm-up & Easy Sends (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM): Set up pads, do dynamic stretches, and warm up on low 4s and 5-grade traverses and gentle slabs.
- The Boulder Circuit Challenge (1:00 PM – 3:30 PM): Push your grade on classic Helsinki granite problems, practicing technical foot placements, mantle top-outs, and spotting each other.
- Post-Climb Refuel (3:30 PM – 4:30 PM): Pack down gear, brush off any chalk residue according to local outdoor etiquette, and head to a nearby neighborhood café for a coffee and Finnish cinnamon bun (korvapuusti).

- Safety: Never climb alone on tall problems; always ensure your crash pad is placed over flat landing zones and have a spotter protect your head and shoulders.
Backup Plan
If rain makes the outdoor granite slick and dangerous, pivot to one of Helsinki's major indoor climbing gyms—such as KiipeilyAreena Kalasatama or Boulderkeskus Pasila—for an all-weather bouldering session.
