Panoramic Vineyard Hike to the Cedar of Lebanon

Overview

This gorgeous trail starts in the hilltop village of La Morra and winds down through the rolling hills of the Langhe region to the legendary Cedar of Lebanon (Cedro del Libano). Planted on Monfalletto Hill in 1856 by newlyweds Eulalia Della Chiesa and Costanzo Falletti to symbolize their enduring love, this majestic evergreen offers one of the most stunning 360-degree viewpoints over the Barolo vineyards, ancient castles, and the distant Alps.

Step-by-step Plan

1. Belvedere Departure (0:00 - 0:15): Begin at the Piazza Castello viewpoint in La Morra for a panoramic introduction to the Langhe hills. Locate the trailhead for "Sentiero del Barolo" (Trail #7) to head downhill.
2. Hike Through the Crus (0:15 - 1:00): Descend along a combination of gravel paths and country roads cutting right through prestigious Nebbiolo vineyards, hazelnut groves, and historic farmsteads.
3. Hamlet of Annunziata (1:00 - 1:30): Reach the peaceful hamlet of Annunziata in the valley. Take a brief moment to admire the Romanesque bell tower of the historic local abbey.
4. Ascent to Monfalletto Hill (1:30 - 2:00): Follow the path leading up Monfalletto Hill, passing the entrance of the Cordero di Montezemolo wine estate.
5. The Cedar of Lebanon (2:00 - 2:30): Reach the crest of the hill to admire the massive, wind-sculpted branches of the historic Cedar. Relax and enjoy the panoramic viewpoints of nearby castles like Castiglione Falletto. (Note: A low protective fence surrounds the root zone to protect the tree, but you can get close enough for photos and beautiful views).
6. Return Trek or Wine Toast (2:30 - 3:30): Loop back to La Morra uphill, or finish with an optional glass of Barolo at a local winery near the base of the hill.

Backup Plan

If it rains, the clay soil of the vineyards becomes dangerously muddy and slippery. Swap the outdoor hike for a scenic drive down to the hamlet of Annunziata to visit the indoor Museo Ratti (Wine Museum), followed by a warm, indoor wine tasting and lunch inside one of La Morra’s historic wineries or local enotecas.
