Participate in a Traditional Dutch Cheese Market Day
Immerse yourself in a centuries-old Dutch trading spectacle that brings regional culture, historical guild uniforms, and delicious local dairy directly to life.
Overview
Witness a spectacular 400-year-old tradition at the Alkmaar Cheese Market on Waagplein. Watch members of the historic Cheese Carriers Guild in their colorful straw hats move, weigh, and trade heavy wheels of cheese just as they did in the 16th century. Beyond the theatrical negotiations and rapid hand-claps of the traders, you will get to sample rich Goudas, explore local stalls, and visit the historic Weighhouse.
Step-by-step Plan

- 10:00 AM - 10:30 AM: The Opening Bell and Quality Checks Listen as the traditional opening bell is rung to commence trading. Watch the inspectors use specialized scoops to core, smell, and taste the giant cheese wheels.
- 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM: Guild Actions and Weighing Observe the cheese carriers carting massive barrows of cheese to the scales using rapid, rhythmic strides. Keep an eye out for the distinct ribbon colors on their hats, which represent different team divisions.
