How to make it
Step 1: Chill the Glass
- Place your coupe glass in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes before you begin to ensure it is icy cold.
Step 2: Combine Ingredients
- Pour the rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters into a mixing glass.
- Fill the mixing glass roughly three-quarters full with solid ice cubes.
Step 3: Stir to Perfection
- Use a bar spoon to stir the liquid steadily for about 30 seconds. This chills and dilutes the spirit perfectly without introducing tiny air bubbles.
Step 4: Strain and Serve
- Take your coupe glass out of the freezer.
- Strain the cocktail through a Julep or Hawthorne strainer into the chilled glass.
Garnish
Garnish with a single brandied maraschino cherry dropped gently into the center of the glass.
Make it alcohol-free
Swap the rye whiskey for 60ml of a non-alcoholic spirit alternative (such as Lyre's American Malt) and replace the sweet vermouth with 30ml of a non-alcoholic sweet aperitif (such as Lyre's Apéritif Rosso). Finish with a dash of alcohol-free aromatic bitters.
