How to make it

1. Chill the Glass

  1. Pop your Nick & Nora or coupe glass into the freezer, or fill it with ice water while you assemble the drink.

2. Combine and Stir

  1. Add the sweet vermouth, gin, maraschino liqueur, and both dashes of bitters into a mixing glass (or any heavy-bottomed pint glass).
  2. Fill the mixing glass three-quarters full with solid ice cubes.
  3. Stir smoothly for about 25 to 30 seconds until the glass feels frosty and the drink is thoroughly chilled and properly diluted.

3. Strain and Serve

  1. Discard the ice water from your serving glass if you chilled it that way.
  2. Strain the mixture cleanly into the cold glass using a julep strainer or fine mesh sieve.

Garnish

Express the oils from the strip of orange peel over the surface of the drink by pinching it skin-side down, rub the rim gently with the peel, and drop it into the glass or set it on the rim.

Make it alcohol-free

Swap the sweet vermouth for an alcohol-free Italian red aperitif (such as Lyre's Aperitif Rosso or Martini Vibrante), replace the gin with an alcohol-free botanical spirit (such as Seedlip Spice 94 or Gordon's 0.0), substitute the maraschino liqueur with 5ml of standard maraschino cherry syrup from the jar, and use non-alcoholic aromatic bitters.
