Method
Prepare the Apple Filling
- Preheat your oven to 190°C.
- In a medium-sized baking dish, toss the chopped apples with the lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of the granulated sugar until the fruit is evenly coated. Spread the apples out into an even layer in the dish.
Make the Crumble Topping
- In a mixing bowl, stir together the plain flour, rolled oats, and the remaining granulated sugar.
- Add the cold cubed butter. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour and oat mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs with a few larger clumps.
- Scatter the crumble mixture evenly over the seasoned apples in the baking dish. Do not press it down, to ensure the topping stays light and crispy.
Bake and Serve
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the topping is beautifully golden-brown and the apple juices are bubbling up at the edges.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Spoon warm portions into bowls and top each with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.
