Method

Prepare the Apple Filling

  1. Preheat your oven to 190°C.
  2. In a medium-sized baking dish, toss the chopped apples with the lemon juice, ground cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons of the granulated sugar until the fruit is evenly coated. Spread the apples out into an even layer in the dish.

Make the Crumble Topping

  1. In a mixing bowl, stir together the plain flour, rolled oats, and the remaining granulated sugar.
  2. Add the cold cubed butter. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour and oat mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs with a few larger clumps.
  3. Scatter the crumble mixture evenly over the seasoned apples in the baking dish. Do not press it down, to ensure the topping stays light and crispy.

Bake and Serve

  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the topping is beautifully golden-brown and the apple juices are bubbling up at the edges.
  2. Remove from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Spoon warm portions into bowls and top each with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.
