Birnam Wood
by Eleanor Catton
Why read it
It blends high-stakes eco-thriller momentum with sharp psychological drama and wicked social satire. When a guerrilla gardening collective in New Zealand targets an apparently abandoned rural estate, they stumble into a bargain with an enigmatic American tech billionaire building a doomsday bunker, triggering an escalating clash of ideals, paranoia, and survival instincts.
Where to get it
For audio, the English edition is narrated by Saskia Maarleveld and is available on Storytel Netherlands, Nextory, Kobo Plus, Audible, and Google Play Audiobooks. What to expect
Starts as a witty, dialogue-heavy ideological clash and steadily accelerates into a relentless, white-knuckle thriller. The prose is intellectually demanding and incisive, packed with moral compromise, surveillance, and escalating peril, culminating in sudden violence and high-tension physical danger.
