My Sister, the Serial Killer
by Oyinkan Braithwaite
Why read it
This is a brilliantly sharp, darkly comedic literary thriller centered on two sisters in Lagos: Ayoola, a charismatic woman with an inconvenient pattern of fatally stabbing her boyfriends, and Korede, the meticulous nurse who keeps coming to scrub the crime scenes. It explores the tension between family loyalty, morality, and jealousy with exceptional bite and razor-sharp humor.
Where to get it
In the Netherlands, you can listen to the English audiobook on Storytel, Nextory, Audible, or Kobo, narrated with great comedic timing by Weruche Opia (the UK/international edition) or Adepero Oduye (US edition). The digital audiobook and ebook are also frequently accessible through the Dutch Online Bibliotheek (onleihe/audio app) and OverDrive/Libby. Print copies in both English and Dutch translation ('Mijn zusje, de seriemoordenaar') are widely available via bol.com, local bookshops like Athenaeum Boekhandel, and the public library system.
What to expect
Pacing is brisk with short, punchy chapters that make it a very quick, accessible listen. The tone is dry, satirical, and deadpan rather than heavy-handed or terrifying. Content notes include murder, blood and cleanup scenes, abusive family dynamics in flashbacks, and toxic romantic relationships.
