Baja California Desert-to-Sea Family Road Trip
This classic Baja road trip pairs cactus-studded desert mountains with the calm, turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez. It offers families safe, calm swimming bays, easy boat excursions to see playful sea lions, and charming historic towns along paved, scenic highways.
When to go
November through April is the ideal window, offering warm, sunny days (24–28°C), cool evenings, and active marine life (including migrating whales). Avoid August and September due to extreme desert heat and late-summer tropical storm risk.
Overview
This 8-day self-drive route traces Baja California Sur from the Pacific coast over the Sierra de la Giganta to the tranquil bays of the Sea of Cortez. Built around gentle driving days (2–4 hours per leg), shallow beaches with minimal surf, and easy-paced towns, it is tailored for families wanting desert adventures alongside marine encounters.
Getting There
From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), take a one-stop flight to Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) via Mexico City (with Aeroméxico/KLM) or major US hubs like Houston, Dallas, or Atlanta (with United or American Airlines). Total travel time is approximately 16 to 19 hours including the layover. At SJD airport, pick up a rental SUV with full comprehensive insurance to start your self-drive circuit.

Know Before You Go
- Driving Safety: Stick to daytime driving only. Free-roaming livestock (cows, goats) often wander across desert highways, and rural stretches lack street lighting.
- Fuel Strategy: Fill your petrol tank whenever it drops to half, as distances between reputable service stations can exceed 150 km.
- Tolls & Cash: Carry Mexican Pesos (MXN) in cash for highway toll booths, beach conservation entry bracelets, boat captain tips, and roadside taco stands.
- Visas & Transit: Dutch passport holders do not need a visa for tourist stays in Mexico under 180 days (standard FMM immigration form provided on entry). If transiting through the United States, ensure every family member holds a valid US ESTA.
