Overview

This 10-day itinerary balances bucket-list marine life on the outer Great Barrier Reef, immersive rainforest hikes in the Daintree and Cape Tribulation, waterfalls and volcanic craters in the Atherton Tablelands, and laid-back coastal dining in Port Douglas.

Getting There

From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), the most efficient route is a one-stop flight via Singapore Changi (SIN) with Singapore Airlines directly into Cairns Airport (CNS), totaling approximately 21 to 24 hours of travel time. Alternatively, Cathay Pacific connects via Hong Kong, or you can fly via Doha or Dubai into Brisbane/Sydney followed by a short domestic connection. Return economy fares generally range between €1,250 and €1,750 depending on booking lead time and season.

Day-by-day

Day 1: Arrival & Cairns Waterfront

• Land at Cairns International Airport, pick up a rental car, and settle into your accommodation.
• Take a gentle stroll along the Cairns Esplanade, check out the saltwater swimming lagoon, and dine on fresh local seafood along the marina.

Day 2: Outer Great Barrier Reef Expedition

• Board a full-day catamaran cruise from the Reef Fleet Terminal to the pristine Outer Barrier Reef (such as Hastings or Opal Reef).
• Spend the day snorkeling or scuba diving among coral gardens, sea turtles, reef sharks, and clownfish.

Day 3: Kuranda Scenic Railway & Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

• Board the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway winding through carved mountain tunnels and waterfalls.
• Explore Kuranda village and return via the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, gliding just meters above the dense canopy with stops at Barron Falls.

Day 4: Coastal Drive to Port Douglas via Mossman Gorge

• Take the scenic Captain Cook Highway north to Port Douglas.
• Stop at Mossman Gorge within Daintree National Park for an Indigenous Ngadiku Dreamtime walk led by Kuku Yalanji guides through ancient sacred rainforest.
• Watch the sunset over Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas.

Day 5: Daintree River & Cape Tribulation

• Cross the Daintree River by vehicular ferry into the prehistoric jungle.
• Take a guided river cruise to spot wild saltwater crocodiles in the mangroves.
• Walk along the boardwalks at Jindalba and Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest fringe directly touches coral sands.

Day 6: Low Isles Sailing & Marine Sanctuary

• Take a day-sail excursion on a catamaran from Port Douglas to the Low Isles.
• Snorkel in the calm, protected coral lagoon famous for abundant green sea turtles and giant clams, followed by an afternoon beach walk around the historic lighthouse.

Day 7: Ascend to the Atherton Tablelands

• Drive inland up the range to the lush Atherton Tablelands.
• Visit the Curtain Fig Tree near Yungaburra, spot wild platypus from the viewing platform at Peterson Creek at dusk, and enjoy local farm-gate dairy and tropical fruit tastings.

Day 8: Waterfall Circuit & Volcanic Craters

• Swim in the natural volcanic amphitheater of Lake Eacham.
• Drive the famous Millaa Millaa waterfall circuit, stopping at Millaa Millaa, Zillie, and Ellinjaa Falls.
• Tour the historic Spanish-style ruins surrounded by lush gardens at Paronella Park in Mena Creek.

Day 9: Fitzroy Island Day Trip

• Return toward Cairns and take a 45-minute ferry to Fitzroy Island National Park.
• Hike up to the summit lighthouse, relax on the coral shores of Nudey Beach, and visit the volunteer-run turtle rehabilitation facility.

Day 10: Cairns Culture & Departure

• Browse the Cairns Botanic Gardens (Flecker Gardens) and tank arts center.
• Pick up souvenirs at Rusty's Markets before heading to Cairns Airport for your return flight to Amsterdam.

Know Before You Go

• Visas: Dutch passport holders must secure an eVisitor visa (subclass 651) online before departure; it is free and generally granted quickly.
• Driving: Driving is on the left-hand side of the road. A standard Dutch driver's license with English text/International Driving Permit is recommended.
• Marine Stinger & Crocodile Safety: Never swim in mainland ocean beaches, estuaries, or river mouths unless inside designated stinger enclosures or marked safe zones due to saltwater crocodiles and seasonal marine stingers (Irukandji/box jellyfish).
