Romantic Coastal Riviera: Villefranche-sur-Mer to Menton by Rail
Trading airport stress for scenic European rail, this itinerary lets you slow down together along the most romantic stretch of the Côte d'Azur. Villefranche-sur-Mer and Menton offer intimate pastel-toned old towns, seaside cliff walks, and easy rail hops without needing a car.
When to go
May to June and September to October offer warm Mediterranean swimming weather, pleasant walking conditions, and noticeably thinner crowds than peak July and August. Avoid November to February if you want vibrant seaside dining, as some seasonal establishments scale back.
Overview
This 6-day overland escape connects the deep blue harbor of Villefranche-sur-Mer with the warm, lemon-scented lanes of Menton right on the Italian border. Travelling entirely by train, you will explore dramatic coastal trails, grand Belle Époque gardens, and quiet Mediterranean coves at an unhurried pace designed for two.
Getting There
From the Netherlands, you can complete the entire journey overland by rail:
- High-speed daytime option: Board the Eurostar from Amsterdam Centraal or Rotterdam Centraal to Paris Gare du Nord (approx. 3h 20m). Cross Paris via Metro Line 4 or 5 to Gare de Lyon, then catch a direct TGV INOUI to Nice-Ville (approx. 5h 45m). From Nice-Ville, local TER trains run every 15–20 minutes to Villefranche-sur-Mer (8 minutes) or Menton (35 minutes). Total travel time is around 10 to 11 hours.
- Sleeper train alternative: Take the Eurostar from the Netherlands to Paris in the late afternoon, have dinner near Gare d'Austerlitz, and board the overnight SNCF Intercités de Nuit directly to Nice, Villefranche, or Menton, arriving refreshed on the coast the following morning.
