Giethoorn Canals & Thatched Cottages Day Trip

📍 Giethoorn, Overijssel, Netherlands

Known as the 'Venice of the North,' Giethoorn offers a tranquil escape where waterways and wooden footbridges replace roads, making it an idyllic day trip from Amsterdam.

When to go

Late April through September brings lush greenery and full boat services. Aim for May, June, or September weekdays to avoid heavy July–August canal congestion.

Overview

Giethoorn is a scenic village nestled in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, famous for its car-free historic core, 18th-century thatched-roof farmhouses, and over 170 wooden bridges. It is best explored at a slow pace by electric whisper boat, bicycle, or walking path.

Getting There

  • By Public Transport: Take the NS Intercity train from Amsterdam Centraal or Amsterdam Zuid to Steenwijk (roughly 1h 30m, either direct towards Leeuwarden or with a quick transfer at Zwolle/Almere). From Steenwijk station, board local Bus 70 or seasonal Bus 270 (Giethoorn Express) directly to Giethoorn (approx. 15–20 minutes). Total journey time is roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way.
  • By Car: Drive east and north via the A6 or A1/A28 (approx. 120 km, 1.5 hours).
  • By Direct Coach/Tour: Organised direct coaches leave Amsterdam daily, taking around 1.5 to 2 hours without transfers.

Day-by-day

  • Day 1: Full-Day Giethoorn Itinerary
  • 08:00 – 10:30: Depart Amsterdam by train/bus or car to arrive in Giethoorn before mid-day tour crowds.
  • 10:30 – 12:30: Rent a self-drive electric 'whisper boat' (fluisterboot) or join a 1-hour guided canal cruise to navigate the village waterways and the open waters of the Bovenwijde lake.
  • 12:30 – 14:00: Enjoy lunch on a waterside terrace along the Binnenpad, sampling Dutch pancakes (pannenkoeken) or regional smoked eel.
  • 14:00 – 15:30: Stroll along the pedestrian-only Binnenpad path, photograph the classic bridges, or visit Museum Giethoorn 't Olde Maat Uus to see how peat farmers lived centuries ago.
  • 15:30 – 17:00: Rent a bicycle to ride into the surrounding Weerribben-Wieden wetlands, or unwind at a local café for coffee and apple tart.
  • 17:00 – 19:30: Catch Bus 70/270 back to Steenwijk and return by train to Amsterdam in time for dinner.

Where to Stay

  • As a day trip, an overnight stay is optional, but if extending: thatched B&Bs or waterfront holiday chalets along the Binnenpad and Zuiderpad allow you to experience the village after day-trippers leave.

Budget

  • Transport: €50–€60 return per person by train and bus (or €35–€65 for organised direct coach transfers).
  • Boat Rental / Tour: €15–€20 per person for a 1-hour canal tour, or €40–€75 total for a 2-hour private electric whisper boat.
  • Food & Drinks: €20–€35 per person for casual canal-side dining.
  • Museum Entry: ~€7–€10 (Museum 't Olde Maat Uus).
  • Estimated Total: €80–€130 per person.

Know Before You Go

  • Canal Etiquette: Stay on the right side when steering your boat; larger tour boats always have the right of way.
  • Peak Congestion: Between 12:00 and 15:00 on summer weekends, village canals can experience 'boat traffic jams'—morning or late afternoon boating is much smoother.
  • Accessibility: The historic centre is car-free with narrow paths and arched footbridges that require climbing steps, which can be challenging for heavy strollers or wheelchairs.
