Day Trip to Kinderdijk Windmills
A stunning contrast to Amsterdam's bustling streets, Kinderdijk offers the ultimate Dutch landscape of 19 historic 18th-century windmills. This UNESCO World Heritage site tells the iconic story of Dutch water management and is easily reachable via a scenic train and boat journey.
When to go
April to October offers the warmest weather and full daily boat schedules. July and August have the longest hours but the highest crowds, while the winter months (November to March) see fewer direct transport connections and shorter opening hours.
Overview
Kinderdijk is home to the largest concentration of old windmills in the Netherlands, constructed in the 1700s to drain water from the low-lying Alblasserwaard polder. Now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, this iconic wetland landscape features beautifully preserved mills, winding waterways, and walking paths. Since it is located just outside Rotterdam, it makes for a highly rewarding and straightforward day trip from Amsterdam.
Getting There (from amsterdam — concrete routes and rough journey time)
Traveling by train and water is the most scenic and efficient way to reach Kinderdijk from Amsterdam. The entire trip takes about 1.5 to 2 hours each way:
- Step 1: Board the NS Intercity Direct train from Amsterdam Centraal to Rotterdam Centraal. This fast service takes approximately 40 minutes and costs about €17.90 one way.
- Step 2: From Rotterdam Centraal, take Metro Line D or E south to the Leuvehaven station (about 5 to 10 minutes). Walk a short distance to the ferry docks under the Erasmus Bridge.
- Step 3: Board the direct tourist WaterShuttle to Kinderdijk (operates seasonally, taking about 30 minutes). Alternatively, ride the public Waterbus Line 20 to Ridderkerk and transfer to the Driehoeksveer foot ferry, or disembark at Alblasserdam and rent a bicycle for a quick 15-minute ride to the entrance.
Day-by-day
Day 1: Windmills and Waterways
- Morning: Catch an early train from Amsterdam Centraal to arrive in Rotterdam by 9:00 AM. Grab a coffee near the Erasmus Bridge before boarding the WaterShuttle or Waterbus. Enjoy the relaxing 30-minute cruise along the river as Rotterdam's modern skyline fades into the lush Dutch countryside.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Kinderdijk. While the paths are free to walk, use your pre-booked ticket to enter the museum windmills (Nederwaard and Blokweer) to see how windmill-dwelling families once lived. Watch the multi-screen educational film at the visitor center and visit the Wisboom Pumping Station. Spend some time cycling along the canal paths or take a hop-on, hop-off cruiser boat tour.
- Late Afternoon: Enjoy a late lunch or snack at the on-site café or in the nearby village of Kinderdijk. Board the return boat back to Rotterdam.
- Evening: Transfer back to Rotterdam Centraal. If time permits, stop for dinner in Rotterdam's lively Markthal before catching the Intercity Direct train back to Amsterdam.
Where to Stay
Because this is planned as a single-day trip, there is no need to book overnight accommodation in Kinderdijk. Amsterdam serves as the perfect base for this excursion. If you wish to extend your journey, the nearby city of Rotterdam offers excellent overnight options, particularly in the Kop van Zuid or Erasmus Bridge areas.

- Bicycles: You can bring your own bicycle on the Waterbus for free, or rent one at the shop near the Kinderdijk entrance.
- Weather Prep: The polder landscape is wide open and highly exposed to wind and rain. Bring a windbreaker and an umbrella regardless of the forecast.
