Montenegro: Coastal Fjords and Alpine Peaks Road Trip

📍 Bay of Kotor & Durmitor, Montenegro

Few European road trips pack as much dramatic variety into short driving distances as Montenegro. Driving from the Netherlands allows you to cross the Alps and the Dalmatian coastline before immersing the family in the serene, fjord-like Bay of Kotor and the glacial lakes and pine forests of Durmitor National Park.

When to go

May to June and September to early October offer mild weather, pleasant swimming conditions, and clear mountain trails without the heavy traffic of peak summer. Avoid November through April due to snow closures on high mountain passes such as the Sedlo Pass.

Overview

This family road trip combines the fortified Venetian coastal towns and calm waters of the Bay of Kotor with the dramatic glacial landscapes and pine forests of Durmitor National Park. Having your own car gives your family total flexibility to stop at panoramic lookouts, lakeside beaches, and alpine meadows at your own pace.

Getting There

Driving from the central Netherlands (e.g., Utrecht or Arnhem) to the Montenegrin border covers roughly 1,900 to 2,050 km. With children, this drive is best broken up over two overnight stops (approx. 20–22 hours total driving time):

  • Route: Netherlands → Germany (A3 past Frankfurt/Nuremberg) → Austria (A10 Tauern Motorway) → Slovenia (Ljubljana) → Croatia (A1 Motorway down Dalmatia past Split and Dubrovnik) → Debeli Brijeg border into Montenegro.
  • Overnight Stops: Recommended overnight family stops include Salzburg/Bled on night one and Zadar or Dubrovnik region on night two.

Day-by-day

Day 1–2: The Drive South & Arrival at the Coast

  • Break up the transit across Germany, Austria, and Croatia with family-friendly rest stops.
  • Cross the border at Debeli Brijeg and take the scenic coastal road around the Bay of Kotor to base yourselves in Dobrota or Perast.

Day 3: Exploring the Bay of Kotor & Our Lady of the Rocks

  • Morning stroll through the pedestrian-only Old Town of Kotor, spotting the town's famous friendly cats.
  • Hop on a short family boat ride from Perast to visit the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks (Gospa od Škrpjela).
  • Afternoon swim in the calm, sheltered waters along the bay.

Day 4: Lovćen Serpentine Road & Lake Skadar

  • Drive the famous Kotor Serpentine road (25 hairpin bends offering panoramic bay views).
  • Continue via Cetinje to Lake Skadar National Park.
  • Take a traditional wooden boat ride through the water lily channels to spot pelicans and birds.

Day 5: Journey into the Dinaric Alps (Durmitor)

  • Drive north via Nikšić and through the Piva River canyon toward Žabljak (approx. 3.5 hours).
  • Check into an alpine chalet and take an easy afternoon stroll around the forested perimeter of Black Lake (Crno Jezero).

Day 6: Tara River Canyon & Glacial Adventures

  • Visit the towering Đurđevića Tara Bridge spanning Europe's deepest river canyon.
  • Opt for a mild, family-friendly rafting float or simply picnic along the turquoise riverbanks.
  • In the afternoon, take a scenic drive along the Sedlo Pass route with views of dramatic limestone peaks.

Day 7: Mountain Meadows & Beginning the Return Drive

  • Spend a relaxed morning visiting alpine cheese farms or taking the easy walking trail to Zminje Lake.
  • Begin the scenic drive back toward central Europe, crossing into Bosnia & Herzegovina or Croatia for your first return overnight stop.

Where to Stay

  • Bay of Kotor (3 nights): Family-friendly apartments with water access in Dobrota, Muo, or Stoliv. These areas are quieter and offer easier car parking than staying directly inside Kotor's pedestrian walled town.
  • Žabljak / Durmitor (2 nights): Traditional wooden A-frame chalets (kolibe) or self-catering alpine lodges with large gardens and easy trail access for children.

Budget

  • Transit & Tolls: €250–€350 (Austrian vignettes/tunnels, Slovenian vignette, Croatian highway tolls, and Sozina tunnel/ferry in Montenegro).
  • Fuel (Round Trip ~4,200 km): €550–€700 depending on vehicle efficiency.
  • Accommodation (Family of 4): €90–€160 per night (€650–€1,100 total for 7 nights).
  • Food & Activities (Boat tours, national park entry fees, dining): €70–€120 per day.
  • Estimated Total: ~€1,800–€2,600 (EUR).

Know Before You Go

  • Currency & Border Documents: Montenegro uses the Euro (€) as its de facto currency. Ensure your car insurance green card covers Montenegro and carry valid passports for everyone (EU identity cards are generally accepted for tourism under 30 days, but valid passports ensure smooth transit across non-EU border checkpoints).
  • Mobile Data & Roaming: Montenegro is outside the EU roaming zone; turn off data roaming at the border to avoid steep carrier fees and buy a local tourist e-SIM/SIM card at a service station.
  • Driving Nuances: Mountain switchbacks are narrow; use low gears on descents and yield to ascending vehicles on single-lane roads.
