Grand European Overland Journey to Naxos
Naxos offers the quintessential Cycladic escape without the commercial buzz of Mykonos or Santorini. As the greenest and largest Cycladic island, it balances sun-drenched golden beaches, Venetian stone towers, mountainous traditional villages, and exceptional local gastronomy. Reaching it entirely by rail and sea turns the commute into a romantic pan-European adventure, drifting through the Alps, sailing the Adriatic, and cruising across the Aegean.
When to go
September to early October is ideal: sea temperatures are at their warmest, summer crowds have dispersed, and temperatures are comfortable (around 24–27°C). May to June is also wonderful for wildflowers and sightseeing. Avoid mid-July through August if you dislike high temperatures and strong Meltemi winds, and note that November through March sees reduced ferry timetables and many island businesses closed.
Overview
This 10-day couple's itinerary takes you from the lowlands of the Netherlands to the ancient heart of the Aegean without setting foot on a plane. The outward journey is a classic overland expedition across the Alps to Italy, followed by an Adriatic cruise into Greece and a scenic ferry through the Cyclades. Once in Naxos, you will find a relaxed blend of quiet sandy beaches, marble-paved mountain hamlets, ancient temples, and world-class local food, from mountain cheeses to fresh seafood.
Getting There (from the Netherlands — concrete routes and rough journey time)
Reaching Greece strictly by land and ferry takes approximately 2 to 2.5 days of travel:
- Netherlands to Northern/Central Italy (Train ~12–15 hours): Depart Amsterdam Centraal, Utrecht, or Arnhem via ICE train into Germany (Frankfurt/Munich or Basel, Switzerland), connecting southward via Zurich or Milan down to the Adriatic port of Ancona (or Bari). An overnight sleeper train option (ÖBB Nightjet to Innsbruck/Venice or Munich) is also viable.
- Adriatic Sea Crossing (Ferry ~21–23 hours): Board an overnight passenger ferry with a private cabin (operated by ANEK-Superfast or Minoan Lines) from Ancona to Patras, Greece.
- Patras to Piraeus/Athens (Bus/Train ~3–3.5 hours): Take the direct KTEL express bus or train/suburban rail link from Patras Port directly to Athens and the ferry port of Piraeus.
- Piraeus to Naxos (Ferry ~3.5 to 5.5 hours): Board a regular ferry (Blue Star Ferries, ~5 hours) or a high-speed catamaran (Seajets, ~3.5 hours) straight into Naxos Chora harbor.

Where to Stay
- Naxos Town (Chora) & Grotta: Ideal if you want walkability to restaurants, the port, and historic sites without needing to drive every evening.
- Agios Prokopios / Agia Anna: Great balance of proximity to Chora (10–15 minutes) and direct access to pristine beaches with small boutique hotels.
- Plaka: Best for couples seeking peace, wide sand dunes, and boutique beach suites set away from the crowds.
Budget
- International Trains (Netherlands–Italy return): €220–€380 per couple (or using an Interrail Global Pass, roughly €400–€550 total for two plus seat reservations).
- Adriatic Ferries (Ancona–Patras return with private 2-bed cabin): €350–€600 total.
- Domestic Ferries (Piraeus–Naxos return): €160–€240 total.

- Car/Scooter Rental (3–4 days): €120–€200 total.

Know Before You Go
- Visas & Borders: As both the Netherlands, Italy, and Greece are within the Schengen Area, there are no border checks between them. Keep passports or national ID cards handy at port check-ins.
- Booking Ahead: Adriatic ferry cabins and high-speed train reservations between Germany/Switzerland and Italy should be reserved well in advance, particularly for departures between June and September.
- Local Transport: While public buses serve the main coastal routes from Chora, renting a small car or scooter for at least 2–3 days is strongly recommended to explore the mountain villages and remote archaeological sites.
- Wind & Sea Conditions: Cycladic ferries operate reliably, but high winds (Meltemi) can occasionally delay smaller catamarans. Larger conventional ferries (such as Blue Star Ferries) provide smoother journeys for those prone to motion sickness.
