A Day Escape to Texel Island

Overview

Texel is the largest and most accessible of the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands. Having a car gives you total freedom to traverse the island from south to north in under 30 minutes, hopping between quiet nature reserves, dramatic dune landscapes, and coastal villages. It provides an invigorating coastal contrast to Amsterdam's urban buzz in an easy, self-paced day.

Getting There

From central Amsterdam, drive north along the A9 and N9 (or via the A7 and N99) directly to the TESO ferry terminal in Den Helder. The drive takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 30 minutes (roughly 85–90 km).

At Den Helder, drive straight onto the TESO ferry to Texel ('t Horntje). Crossings depart every hour on the half-hour (with half-hourly departures during peak times) and take only 20 minutes. You do not need a reservation; your vehicle ticket automatically covers the return crossing as well.

Day-by-day

Day 1: Island Loop from South to North

• 07:30 – 09:30 | Drive & Ferry Crossing: Depart Amsterdam early to catch the 08:30 or 09:00 ferry from Den Helder. Enjoy the view of the Marsdiep strait from the upper deck during the 20-minute crossing.
• 09:30 – 11:30 | De Slufter Nature Reserve: Drive north into Dunes of Texel National Park to visit De Slufter, an open tidal valley where the sea flows freely through the dunes. Walk up the stairs of the watch dike and follow the boardwalk trails through the salt marsh.
• 11:30 – 13:30 | Texel Lighthouse & North Beach: Continue driving to the northern tip at De Cocksdorp. Park near the bright red Texel Lighthouse (Vuurtoren Texel) and walk out onto the vast, windswept beach where the North Sea meets the Wadden Sea. Grab a budget-friendly lunch or coffee at a nearby beach pavilion or pack a picnic to eat among the dunes.
• 13:30 – 15:30 | Den Burg Historic Centre: Head inland to Texel's main village, Den Burg. Stroll the circular medieval street layout, browse local artisan shops, and pick up regional Texel sheep cheese or local craft beer.
• 15:30 – 17:30 | Coastal Dunes or Oudeschild: Choose between an afternoon beach walk near De Koog (Paal 17/20) or visit the historic fishing port of Oudeschild along the eastern Wadden Sea dike to watch the shrimp boats.
• 18:00 – 20:30 | Return Crossing & Evening Drive: Drive back down to 't Horntje ferry dock. Board the ferry back to Den Helder (no ticket checks on the return journey) and complete the drive back to Amsterdam in time for dinner.

Where to Stay

This itinerary is built as a return day trip with no overnight accommodation required. However, if you choose to extend your stay on a budget, look for farm campsites (minicampings) across the central polder or budget B&Bs in Den Burg and De Koog.

Know Before You Go

• Parking Vignette: Buy the digital Texel parking vignette (Texelvignet) online via your car's registration plate before you arrive to avoid dealing with hourly pay machines at individual car parks.
• Ferry Operations: Ferry tickets bought via TESO are open return; you do not book a specific departure time. On busy summer Sunday afternoons, return queues at 't Horntje can back up, so aim for a ferry before 17:30 or after 19:30.
• Weather Gear: Coastal winds on Texel are much stronger than on the mainland. Always pack a windbreaker and sturdy walking shoes, even on mild summer days.
