Zanzibar Archipelago: Spice Islands, Coral Reefs, and Swahili Heritage
Zanzibar blends layered Swahili culture, labyrinthine historic alleys, and world-class Indian Ocean beaches into a single compact island escape. With direct seasonal charter flights and seamless one-stop scheduled connections from Amsterdam, Dutch travellers can trade the North Sea coast for powder-white sands, dhow sailing, and fragrant spice plantations on a very manageable mid-range budget.
When to go
The best periods to visit are the long dry season from June to October (pleasantly warm, lower humidity, minimal rain) and the short dry season from late December through February. Avoid the long rains (monsoon) from late March to May, when many boutique lodges close and heavy downpours are frequent. November has brief short rains that rarely disrupt travel.
Overview
An 8-night itinerary through the Zanzibar Archipelago, dividing time between the historic stone alleys of Stone Town, the calm turquoise waters of the northwest beaches, and the laid-back village vibe of the southeast coast.

Know Before You Go
- Mandatory Inbound Insurance: Zanzibar requires all foreign incoming visitors to purchase official Inbound Travel Insurance via the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation portal (approx. $44) prior to arrival, even if you already carry Dutch travel insurance.
- Visa Requirements: Dutch/EU passport holders require a tourist visa ($50), which should be secured online as an e-visa prior to departure.
- Health Precautions: Zanzibar is a malaria-risk area; consult your local Dutch health clinic (GGD) regarding anti-malarial medication. A Yellow Fever certificate is strictly required if transiting for more than 12 hours through an endemic country (e.g., Kenya or Ethiopia).
- Cultural Etiquette: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim; while swimwear is standard on private beaches and around resort pools, modest dress covering shoulders and knees is expected when walking through Stone Town and rural fishing villages.
- Tidal Shifts: The east coast (Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe) experiences massive tidal swings where the ocean recedes hundreds of metres at low tide; the north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) is much less affected by tides.
