Botanical Garden Plein Air Couple's Painting

creative📍 Bogotá, Bogotá D.C., Colombia

This activity lets you slow down and immerse yourselves in Colombia's extraordinary biodiversity, turning a peaceful date into a shared creative memory surrounded by lush Andean flora, tranquil water features, and historic greenhouse architecture.

Overview

Spend a relaxed morning or afternoon capturing the vibrant flora and tranquil landscapes of the José Celestino Mutis Botanical Garden in Bogotá. With portable watercolor or gouache kits, you and your partner will set up side-by-side in a quiet meadow or near the rose garden to paint what catches your eye. Whether you are experienced painters or complete novices, the focus is on enjoying fresh Andean air, noticing fine botanical details, and having fun interpreting nature together.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. Pre-Trip Supply Gathering (30 minutes): Pack a lightweight art kit at home with pocket watercolor sets, water brushes, sketching pencils, and a couple of watercolor pads or clipboards.
  2. Arrival & Scouting (9:30 AM – 10:15 AM): Enter through the main gates and wander the winding pathways through the Andean forest, rose collection, and wetland areas to find a peaceful, shaded spot with a scenic view (such as near the central pond or under native oak trees).
  3. Set Up & Initial Sketching (10:15 AM – 10:45 AM): Spread out a light picnic blanket or find an empty wooden bench. Loosely sketch your subject—whether it is a striking bromeliad, dramatic palm canopy, or a portrait of each other framed by foliage.
  4. Painting Session (10:45 AM – 12:00 PM): Mix colors, layer water washes, and let the quiet sounds of birdlife and rustling leaves guide your pace. Swap boards halfway through to paint a shared piece or keep each other company while painting your own perspective.
  5. Review & Leisure Walk (12:00 PM – 1:00 PM): Let your paintings dry completely in the mountain breeze, take photos of your finished artwork against the garden backdrop, and enjoy an easy stroll through the modern Tropicario greenhouse domes before heading out.

Reservations & Hours

  • Hours: Open Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM; Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed for routine maintenance on standard Mondays (or Tuesdays following a holiday Monday).
  • Reservations: No advance reservation required; purchase entrance tickets on arrival at the on-site ticket counter.

What to Bring

  • Compact watercolor palette, gouache set, or watercolor pencils
  • Refillable water brushes (or small jars with sealable lids) and paper towels
  • Watercolor paper pads (at least 300 gsm) or hardback sketchbooks with clips
  • Foldable sit-mats or a compact waterproof blanket
  • Light rain shell or windbreaker (Bogotá mountain weather can shift quickly)
  • Sun protection (hat and sunscreen)
  • Reusable water bottles and light snacks

Budget

  • General Garden Admission: Approximately 16,000 COP for Colombian nationals / 38,000 COP for foreign visitors (includes access to the Tropicario complex).
  • Art Supplies (if buying new): Roughly 40,000 to 70,000 COP for beginner pocket watercolor kits and sketch paper at a local stationery shop (Papelería).
  • Snacks & Refreshments: Around 15,000 to 25,000 COP for coffee and pastries on-site or nearby.

Tips & Accessibility

  • Best Time: Arrive early in the morning when the light is softer and the gardens are quietest; mornings also help you finish before typical afternoon mountain showers.
  • Accessibility: Most primary paths throughout the garden are flat, paved, and fully wheelchair and stroller accessible. Benches are distributed regularly across the main walkways.
  • Rules: Stick to paved paths and designated lawn areas. Do not pick flowers, disturb wildlife, or use toxic solvents (stick to water-based paints).

Backup Plan

If rain starts, seek shelter inside the spacious glass Tropicario greenhouses or the café terrace to sketch potted specimens, humid tropical flora, and architectural glass structures until the weather clears.
