Master Calligrapher's Art Session
Morocco is world-renowned for its distinct Maghrebi script and intricate Islamic visual heritage, making a hands-on calligraphy studio session an intimate way to connect with the country's living artistic traditions.
Overview
Step into the quiet, rhythmic world of traditional Maghrebi and Arabic calligraphy under the guidance of a master artisan. In this hands-on studio session, you will learn the sacred geometry behind classic letterforms, carve and shape a traditional reed pen (qalam), mix natural mineral and soot inks, and produce a finished decorative manuscript or personalized keepsake to bring home.
Step-by-step Plan
- Arrival & Mint Tea Welcome (0:00 – 0:20): Settle into the atelier over fresh Moroccan mint tea. Learn about the rich lineage of Moroccan and Andalusian calligraphic styles, including Maghrebi, Kufic, and Thuluth scripts.
- Tool Preparation & Geometry (0:20 – 0:50): Discover the materials. Learn how to hold and bevel the dried reed pen (qalam) and understand the classic "dot system" used to measure letter proportions.
- Guided Practice Strokes (0:50 – 1:30): Practice fundamental strokes, ligatures, and fluid baseline connections across smooth parchment paper with black soot ink.
- Personal Composition (1:30 – 2:15): Select a personal word, name, or proverb. Draft and refine your composition with individual feedback from the master.
- Final Illumination & Drying (2:15 – 2:30): Ink your final piece onto heavy art paper or handmade parchment, optionally adding decorative geometric border accents or gold highlights, then carefully pack it for travel.
What to Bring
- Comfortable, dark-colored clothing (ink splashes can happen).
- A notebook or sketchbook for notes and reference sketches.
- A rigid folder or protective tube to safely transport your wet or dried artwork.
- Reading glasses if you require magnification for fine detail work.
Budget
- Workshop fee: ~350–550 MAD ($35–$55 USD) per person for a 2 to 2.5-hour private or small-group masterclass, including all materials (reeds, inks, papers).
- Optional take-home calligraphy starter kit: ~100–200 MAD ($10–$20 USD) for custom reed pens and ink.
- Instructor gratuity: ~50–100 MAD ($5–$10 USD).
Tips & Accessibility
- No prior Arabic reading or writing ability is needed; instructors tailor the session entirely to visual artistic flow.
- Calligraphy requires sustained fine-motor control and wrist stability, but seating can easily be adapted with standard chairs or traditional low riad seating.
- Studio spaces inside historic medinas often involve narrow doorways and cobblestone paths; notify your host beforehand if ground-level, step-free access is required.
Backup Plan
If a live artisan workshop is fully booked, visit a local cultural museum or historic madrasa (such as Ben Youssef Madrasa or Bou Inania Madrasa) to study carved stucco and tiled inscriptions in person, then stop by an artisanal paper merchant in the medina to pick up a starter reed pen, inkwell, and practice workbook for a self-guided session.
