Private Lake Michigan Paddleboard Lesson
Gliding across Lake Michigan on a stand-up paddleboard pairs core-strengthening sport with unobstructed, open-water views of iconic skyline architecture.
Overview
Experience the calm of early-morning open water with a dedicated private stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) coach along the lakefront. Tailored one-on-one or small-group instruction takes you from dry-land safety fundamentals to standing confidently and gliding across the lake. Lessons cover board balance, forward and turning strokes, reading wind and swell conditions, and safe recovery techniques if you take an unexpected dip.
Step-by-step Plan
- Arrival & Check-in (8:00 AM – 8:15 AM): Meet your instructor at the beach hut or lakefront launch site (such as North Avenue Beach or Montrose Beach). Get fitted for a life jacket (PFD), select an appropriately sized paddle and board, and stow valuables in a dry locker or bag.
- Dry-Land Fundamentals (8:15 AM – 8:30 AM): Review body stance, core engagement, paddle grip mechanics, steering techniques, and safety protocols before setting foot in the water.
- Kneeling & Launching (8:30 AM – 8:45 AM): Carry your board into shallow water, mount in a kneeling position, and practice paddling away from the shoreline chop into calmer water.
- Standing & Stroke Work (8:45 AM – 9:30 AM): Transition to standing. Your instructor will provide real-time adjustments to your stroke cadence, balance, and stance while guiding you parallel to the shoreline.
- Debrief & Cool Down (9:30 AM – 9:45 AM): Paddle back in, exit safely onto the sand, rinse equipment, and review tips for your next solo session.

Tips & Accessibility
- Best Time of Day: Book early morning sessions (before 10:00 AM) to avoid afternoon offshore wind gusts and heavy motorized boat wake.
- Swimming Ability: Basic swimming competence and comfort in deep water are required for safety.
- Accessibility: Instructors can adapt paddling from seated or kneeling positions for individuals with limited mobility or lower-body fatigue.
Backup Plan
If high chop, gale warnings, or thunderstorms trigger a beach safety advisory, contact your outfitter to reschedule for a calmer morning or shift to sheltered flatwater paddling on a local protected harbor or inland river canal.
