Aksara Bali Palm-Leaf Calligraphy Workshop

creative📍 Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Aksara Bali is not just a writing system but a sacred, flowing art form deeply tied to island philosophy, offering an immersive hands-on way to connect with ancient Balinese literature and craft traditions.

Overview

Aksara Bali is an intricate Brahmic script traditionally inscribed onto dried lontar (palmyra palm) leaves using an iron stylus known as a pengrupak. In this meditative practice session, you will learn the fundamental consonants (wreastra), practice carving the curving letterforms into authentic palm-leaf strips, and reveal your text using crushed roasted candlenut (kemiri) ink. It offers a tactile gateway into Balinese philosophy, literacy heritage, and calligraphy art.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. Morning (09:30 – 10:15): Introduction to Aksara Bali Begin by studying the 18 basic characters (Ha-Na-Ca-Ra-Ka...) and vocal modifiers (sandhangan). Practice drawing the flowing, rounded strokes on grid paper using a pencil or fine-point pen to understand character balance and proportion.
  2. Late Morning (10:15 – 11:30): Tool Handling & Stylus Practice Learn how to hold the pengrupak stylus correctly against a blank lontar leaf strip. Inscribe horizontal practice strokes and simple character combinations by scratching the surface without cutting all the way through the leaf fiber.
  3. Midday (11:30 – 12:30): Creating Your Inscribed Keepsake Inscribe a short meaningful phrase, your name phonetically transcribed into Aksara Bali, or a Balinese proverb (sesonggan). Rub the leaf with roasted candlenut soot to fill the etched grooves with black pigment, then wipe away excess oil to reveal crisp, lasting black script.
  4. Afternoon (12:30 – 13:30): Cultural Reflection & Debrief Inspect your finished palm manuscript strip, learn traditional methods for binding (cakepan), and take time to browse traditional lontar collections or enjoy herbal tea.

What to Bring

  • A notebook with grid or ruled paper and a fine-liner pen for draft sketches.
  • Reading glasses or magnifying spectacles if you need help seeing fine detail up close.
  • Wet wipes or dark handkerchief (candlenut soot can smudge fingers).
  • Modest clothing with shoulders covered if participating in a cultural center or temple pavilion setting.

Budget

  • Guided community workshop or private lesson fee: IDR 150,000 – 350,000 per person (covers palm leaves, use of pengrupak, and soot materials).
  • Personal take-home lontar blanks and stylus kit (optional): IDR 75,000 – 150,000.
  • Drinks/refreshments: IDR 30,000 – 60,000.

Tips & Accessibility

  • Hand Fatigue: Holding the iron stylus requires steady downward pressure from your thumb and index finger; take brief 2-minute hand stretches every 20 minutes.
  • Lighting: Natural daylight or focused desk lighting is crucial for seeing faint scratch marks before ink is applied.
  • Accessibility: Seating is typically provided on low wooden platforms (bale) with floor cushions or standard table seating upon request. Most cultural workshops can accommodate standard chair seating if arranged in advance.

Backup Plan

If a palm-leaf carving workshop is unavailable or fully booked, visit a local bookshop or art stationery store to purchase black ink brush pens and textured calligraphy paper. Download the standard Aksara Bali character guide and dedicate two hours in a quiet cafe practicing modern pen-and-ink versions of the script.
