Shadow Puppet (Wayang Kulit) Creation

creative📍 Bantul, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Crafting your own shadow puppet connects you directly to a UNESCO-recognized Indonesian master craft, letting you chisel buffalo leather, paint symbolic patterns, and bring a classic character to life under master artisans.

Overview

Immerse yourself in the centuries-old Javanese tradition of tatah sungging—the art of carving and painting wayang kulit (leather shadow puppets). In this hands-on workshop set within a traditional village atelier, master craftsmen guide you through shaping cured hide, punching delicate lattice patterns, applying vibrant pigments, and mounting horn rods to make a functional shadow puppet you take home.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. Character Selection & Sketching (0:00 – 0:30): Choose a classical figure (such as Arjuna, Semar, or Rama) and trace the outline onto prepared flat hide using a stencil or freehand stylus.
  2. Leather Chiseling / Tatah (0:30 – 1:45): Sit at a wooden carving stump. Learn to use small specialty chisels (tatah) and a wooden mallet to punch out intricate lace-like silhouettes and perforations.
  3. Pigment & Sungging Painting (1:45 – 3:00): Mix traditional paints and apply base coats, graduated shading, and fine gold accents to delineate the character's ornate jewelry and garments.
  4. Drying & Rod Assembly (3:00 – 3:30): Let the pigments set, then attach the articulated joint pins and central horn or bamboo control rods (gapit).
  5. Screen Test (3:30 – 4:00): Test your finished puppet behind a backlit cotton screen (kelir), experimenting with movement, shadow clarity, and basic puppetry techniques.
