Turquoise Shores and Coral Gardens: A Week in Koh Lipe

📍 Satun Province, Thailand

Known as the 'Maldives of Thailand', Koh Lipe delivers powder-white sand, vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life, and a relaxed, walkable footprint on the edge of the Tarutao National Marine Park. It offers pristine diving and idyllic island living without the heavy vehicle traffic or mega-resort sprawl found on larger Thai islands.

Quando andare

Mid-November to April offers sunny, dry weather and calm seas ideal for boat trips and snorkeling. Avoid mid-May through October due to southwest monsoon rains, rough seas, and seasonal conservation closures across the surrounding marine park. Peak season arrives around late December to February.

Overview

Tucked away in the far south of Thailand near the Malaysian border, Koh Lipe is a small, crescent-shaped paradise bordered by the turquoise waters of the Andaman Sea. Surrounded by the protected islands of Tarutao National Marine Park, it serves as a premier base for world-class snorkeling, scuba diving, and relaxing beachside living. Because the island has no cars and can be crossed on foot in under 30 minutes, it retains an intimate, barefoot charm that is increasingly rare across Southeast Asia.

Getting There

  • Route: Fly from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Bangkok (BKK/DMK), connect on a 1.5-hour domestic flight to Hat Yai International Airport (HDY), take a 1.5- to 2-hour minivan or taxi transfer to Pak Bara Pier in Satun, and finally board a 1.5-hour speedboat directly to Koh Lipe.
  • Alternative High-Season Route (November–April): Fly Amsterdam to Langkawi, Malaysia (via Doha or Singapore/Kuala Lumpur), then take a direct 90-minute international ferry from Langkawi to Koh Lipe, clearing immigration on the beach.
  • Total Journey Time: Expect around 18 to 22 hours of total transit from the Netherlands.

Day-by-day

  • Day 1: Arrival & Sunset on Pattaya Beach Arrive at Koh Lipe via speedboat. Check into your accommodation, unpack, and stroll down Pattaya Beach. Watch the golden hour over the Andaman Sea while enjoying fresh coconut water or a local cocktail at a beachfront lounge.
  • Day 2: Beach Exploration & Snorkeling Off Sunrise Beach Spend your morning swimming off Sunrise Beach, where vibrant coral reefs sit just a short paddle from the shore. Grab lunch at a beach shack, rent a kayak to paddle around nearby Koh Kra, and in the evening, wander down the pedestrianized Walking Street for dinner.
  • Day 3: Inner Island Snorkeling Tour Hire a private or joint longtail boat to explore the inner marine park islands: marvel at the polished black rocks of Koh Hin Ngam, snorkel the colorful soft corals of Jabang submerged pinnacle, and relax on the white sands of Koh Rawi.
  • Day 4: Day Hike & Panoramic Views on Koh Adang Take a 10-minute longtail taxi across the channel to neighboring, uninhabited Koh Adang. Hike up to the Chado Cliff viewpoints for an aerial vista of Koh Lipe, walk through the pine groves to deserted beaches, and return for a laid-back seafood barbecue.
  • Day 5: Scuba Diving or Outer Island Excursion Head out on a two-tank morning dive with a local dive center to spots like 8 Mile Rock or Stonehenge to spot barracudas, devil rays, and sea turtles. Non-divers can book an outer-island tour covering Koh Hin Son and Koh Tong.
  • Day 6: SUP, Sunset Beach & Chilled Living Rent a stand-up paddleboard on Sunrise Beach during high tide. Spend a quiet afternoon reading in a hammock, then walk over to Sunset Beach (Pramong) for an uncrowded view of the sun sinking into the ocean, followed by fresh Thai street food.
  • Day 7: Farewell Sunrise & Departure Wake up early to catch the sunrise over the water from the sandspit. Enjoy a final tropical breakfast before catching the morning speedboat back to Pak Bara Pier for your onward transfers to Hat Yai and return flights to the Netherlands.

Where to Stay

  • Sunrise Beach (East Coast): Ideal for relaxed beachfront resorts, ocean breezes, and direct access to snorkeling reefs. Quieter than Pattaya Beach while still walkable to everything.
  • Pattaya Beach (South Coast): Best for lively dining, beach bars, and immediate proximity to Walking Street. Offers wide sands but sees more boat traffic.
  • Sunset Beach & Northern Headlands: Perfect for secluded, eco-conscious bungalows and tranquil surroundings away from the crowds.

Budget

  • International & Domestic Flights: €750–€1,100 per person round-trip from Amsterdam to Hat Yai/Langkawi.
  • Transfers & Ferries: €40–€60 per person one-way (minivan + speedboat combo from Hat Yai).
  • Accommodation: €35–€70/night for clean mid-range bungalows; €100–€220/night for upscale beachfront resorts.
  • Food & Drinks: €15–€35 per person/day for a mix of local Thai restaurants, fresh seafood, and beach cafes.
  • Activities & Park Fees: €20–€35 for boat day tours; ~€5.50 (200 THB) Tarutao National Park fee (valid 5–7 days); €80–€100 for a 2-tank guided scuba dive.

Know Before You Go

  • Entry & Marine Park Fees: Foreign visitors must pay the Tarutao National Marine Park fee (200 THB) and pier entry fee (20 THB) in cash upon arrival. Keep your park ticket with you on all boat excursions.
  • Cash is Essential: While ATMs and card machines are present on Walking Street, power or network outages occasionally happen, and card surcharges (3–5%) are common. Carry sufficient Thai Baht cash.
  • Sun & Reef Protection: Bring reef-safe sunscreen (sunscreen containing oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC, or butylparaben is banned in Thai national parks) and respect coral by never stepping on reefs.
  • Visas: Dutch passport holders generally qualify for visa-exempt entry into Thailand for short touristic stays (standard 30–60 days depending on prevailing regulations); ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity.
