Private Andean Textile & Natural Dye Masterclass

creative📍 Chinchero, Cusco, Peru

This hands-on workshop takes you deep into the living heritage of the Sacred Valley, letting you transform raw alpaca wool with native botanicals and master ancestral backstrap weaving alongside Indigenous artisans.

Overview

Immerse yourself in centuries of living Andean art through a private, hands-on masterclass in the Sacred Valley. Guided by Quechua artisan weavers, you will walk through every step of traditional textile production: cleansing raw fleece using native soaproot, creating botanical dyes from local plants and cochineal, spinning yarn on a traditional drop spindle (phuskha), and setting up a backstrap loom to weave your own keepsake piece.

Step-by-step Plan (rough timing)

  1. 09:00 AM – Arrival & Traditional Welcome: Arrive at the weaving workshop in Chinchero. Enjoy a warm cup of muña (Andean mint) or coca tea while meeting your artisan instructors.
  2. 09:30 AM – Fiber Prep & Washing: Learn how freshly sheared alpaca and sheep fleece is washed using grated saqta (a native root that acts as natural detergent).
  3. 10:00 AM – Drop Spindle Spinning: Try your hand at spinning raw wool into workable yarn using the traditional Andean drop spindle (phuskha).
  4. 10:45 AM – Natural Dye Alchemy: Crush dried cochineal bugs and mix local botanicals (such as q'olle flowers, chilca leaves, and yanali bark) with natural mordants (mineral salts and citrus) to produce vivid crimson, gold, and turquoise dye baths over open pots.
  5. 12:00 PM – Dyeing the Yarn: Submerge wool skeins into the boiling dye pots to fix the colors, watching the immediate transformation of the natural fibers.
  6. 12:30 PM – Backstrap Loom Weaving: Strap into a traditional backstrap loom (telar de cintura). Learn basic warp-and-weft patterns and the symbolic meaning of traditional geometric motifs (pallay) as you weave a small band or bracelet to take home.
  7. 01:30 PM – Wrap-up & Gallery Browsing: Admire the finished community tapestries and shop for authentic, direct-from-artisan pieces before departing.

  • Reusable water bottle and light snacks.
  • Cash in Peruvian Soles (PEN) for tipping instructors and purchasing genuine handcrafted textiles.

Backup Plan

If mountain weather makes open-air dyeing difficult or you prefer to stay within Cusco city limits, visit the Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco (CTTC) Museum and Shop on Avenida El Sol in central Cusco. You can explore their indoor weaving exhibitions, observe live indoor demonstrations, and take an indoor weaving class by reservation.
