Private Sculling Rowing on Chicago River
Gliding backwards across calm urban water in a sleek sculling shell provides a rhythmic, full-body athletic challenge paired with a peaceful perspective on historic industrial riverways and iconic city bridges.
Overview
Experience the precision and quiet flow of open-water sculling on the protected branches of the Chicago River. Unlike group sweep rowing where each athlete handles one large oar, sculling equips you with two balanced oars in a single or double shell. Under the direct guidance of a private coach, you will master the mechanics of the catch, drive, finish, and recovery while navigating the sheltered bends of the river alongside historic brick facades and modern architectural landmarks.
Step-by-step Plan
- Land Briefing & Erg Technique (0:00–0:25): Meet your coach at the boathouse. Review safety guidelines, step onto the rowing machine (ergometer) to refine body sequencing—legs, core, arms—and practice blade management before heading to the dock.
- Dock Launch & Rig Setup (0:25–0:40): Carry your shell down to the low dock, adjust foot stretchers for leg length, lock the oars into the oarlocks, and master the balance required to safely board a narrow sliding-seat boat.
- Guided Water Work (0:40–1:30): Push off onto the quiet stretch of the North Branch or South Branch. Progress from stationary balancing drills and feathering the blades to fluid full-slide strokes, working with your coach running alongside on a launch or bike.
- Dock Return & Shell Care (1:30–1:45): Navigate smoothly back to the slip, carefully exit the shell, wash down the boat and oars, and store the equipment.
- Post-Row Debrief & Warm Drink (1:45–2:15): Stretch on the river deck and review video feedback or technique cues over a hot coffee at a nearby riverfront cafe.
Reservations & Hours
- Season & Timing: Water sessions generally run from April through October. Early morning slots (6:30 AM to 9:30 AM) are strongly recommended for glassy, calm water before boat traffic picks up.
- Booking: Private lessons must be scheduled in advance through local river outfits (such as Lincoln Park Boat Club or Wateriders) or by arranging an independent USRowing-certified private coach.
What to Bring
- Form-fitting athletic clothes (loose shorts or jackets can snag in sliding seat wheels and oar handles)
- Thin athletic socks (shoes either stay on the dock or slip directly into boat foot stretchers)
- Crocs, flip-flops, or slip-on water shoes for the wet dock
- Sunglasses with a secure strap and mineral sunscreen
- Reusable water bottle
- Complete change of dry clothes and small towel in a dry bag
Budget
- Private Lesson (1.5–2 hours): $110–$175 per person (includes equipment rental, coach instruction, and boathouse launch access)
- Coach Gratuity: $15–$25
- Post-Row Coffee & Snack: $8–$12
Tips & Accessibility
- Swimming Requirement: Most river facilities require participants to sign a basic swim proficiency waiver or wear an inflatable low-profile PFD.
- Accessibility: Rowing demands leg mobility, core stability, and upper-body rotation. Specialized adaptive sculling equipment with stabilizing pontoons is available through select regional adaptive sports programs upon request.
Backup Plan
If heavy rain, high water discharge, or strong winds make the river unsafe for single shells, transition to an indoor tank or high-tech ergometer technique coaching session at a local boathouse training center, followed by a walk through the Chicago Architecture Center.
