Vineyard Pigment Foraging & Natural Dye Sketching

creative📍 Casablanca, Valparaíso Region, Chile

Central Chile's coastal wine valleys blend biodynamic viticulture with rich native flora, offering an inspiring, tactile way to connect art and terroir by turning raw botanical matter into bespoke watercolor inks.

Overview

This hands-on outdoor creative session invites you to explore the rich botanical landscape of Casablanca's organic vineyards. Instead of relying on store-bought paints, you will forage for fallen plant materials—such as vine leaves, pruning castoffs, wild mallow flowers, eucalyptus bark, and nutrient-rich granitic earth—and extract natural inks on site. Using simple mulling tools and water, you will create a custom palette of earthy pigments and sketch the surrounding coastal landscape in your personal journal.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. Morning Arrival & Garden Walk (10:00 AM – 11:15 AM): Arrive at an organic estate in the Casablanca Valley (such as Emiliana Organic Vineyards or Matetic). Walk the vineyard borders and biodynamic garden trails to mindfully gather dry botanical matter: fallen vine leaves, dried berries, wild mustard flowers, and loose soil.
  2. Color Extraction & Mulling (11:15 AM – 12:15 PM): Settle at a shaded picnic bench. Use a portable mortar and pestle or flat stone to grind your dry materials. Add small amounts of water, lemon juice (for shifting acidity/color), or a drop of gum arabic to bind the liquid into workable watercolor inks.
  3. Swatch Testing & Palette Creation (12:15 PM – 12:45 PM): Test your botanical extracts on heavy watercolor paper. Observe the spectrum of ochres, olive greens, vine purples, and soft tans that reflect the valley's distinct terroir.
  4. Plein Air Sketching & Picnic (12:45 PM – 2:00 PM): Sketch the vine rows and coastal cordillera silhouettes using your fresh inks and a water brush pen, while relaxing with a light snack or glass of local wine.

What to Bring

  • Heavyweight watercolor paper (300 gsm cold-press) or an unlined travel sketchbook.
  • Portable mini mortar and pestle (or small mixing bowls and a wooden muddler).
  • Refillable water brushes and a small container for rinsing.
  • Small mesh strainer or cheesecloth scraps for filtering pulp.
  • Cloth collection pouch or paper bags for foraging loose botanical specimens.
  • Sun protection (wide-brim hat, sunscreen) and plenty of drinking water.

Budget

  • Vineyard Entry/Tasting Fee: CLP 15,000–35,000 per person (if combining with a self-guided estate tour or standard tasting).
  • Art Supplies (sketchbook, water brushes, paper): CLP 10,000–20,000 (one-time purchase at local stationery shops).
  • Snacks / Local Tasting Glass: CLP 8,000–15,000.

Tips & Accessibility

  • Foraging Ethics: Only harvest fallen leaves, pruning trimmings, loose earth, and non-endangered wild plants. Do not cut live vine branches or pick grapes from production rows without staff permission.
  • Color Chemistry: A pinch of baking soda turns plant anthocyanins toward blues and greens, while a splash of lemon juice brightens them to vivid pinks.
  • Accessibility: Most Casablanca visitor centers feature paved or compacted gravel courtyards with accessible picnic seating, though deeper vineyard paths may feature uneven dirt and mild inclines.

Backup Plan

If sudden coastal fog (camanchaca) or rain sets in, relocate to a sheltered estate terrace or an indoor art studio in Casablanca town to brew warm pigment teas using dried kitchen botanicals (such as hibiscus, turmeric, and spent coffee grounds).
