Arctic Ice Hole Plunge & Trail Run

sporty📍 Vantaa, Uusimaa, Finland

Combining an invigorating winter trail run through snow-dusted pine forests with the intense contrast of a traditional Finnish smoke sauna and an open ice hole plunge delivers an unforgettable physical rush and quintessential Finnish sisu.

Overview

Experience the ultimate Finnish winter ritual by pairing an active trail run with avantouinti (ice hole swimming) and traditional wood-fired heat. You will jog through the snowy, undulating forested trails connecting to Sipoonkorpi National Park before heading to Lake Kuusijärvi for deep thermogenic recovery across authentic public smoke saunas and a carved opening in the frozen lake.

Step-by-step Plan

  1. 13:30 – Arrival & Gear Staging: Arrive at the Lake Kuusijärvi recreation center. Purchase your sauna wristband at the main building and store your dry clothes, sauna gear, and towels in the lockers.
  2. 14:00 – Forest Trail Run (approx. 45–60 mins): Head out over the striking high steel Sudentassu ("Wolf's Paw") bridge onto the trails leading into Sipoonkorpi National Park. Run a scenic 5–8 km out-and-back loop across packed snow paths among towering spruces and rocky ridges.
  3. 15:00 – Pre-Sauna Rinse & First Warm-up: Return to Kuusijärvi, strip down to your swimwear in the heated changing facilities, shower, and step into one of the traditional lakeside smoke saunas. Relax on the upper benches until thoroughly warmed to the core (approx. 10–15 mins).
  4. 15:20 – The Ice Plunge: Walk calmly down the wooden dock to the lake's maintained ice hole (avanto). Descend the metal ladder into near-freezing water, keeping your breathing steady and controlled for 15–30 seconds before climbing out.
  5. 15:30 – Sauna & Plunge Cycles: Repeat the hot-to-cold cycle 2 to 3 times, soaking in the serene forest-lake view between sessions.
  6. 16:45 – Post-Plunge Refuel: Finish with a warm shower, change into dry layers, and stop by Café Kuusijärvi for a hot salmon soup (lohikeitto) or steaming berry juice.

Reservations & Hours

What to Bring

  • Running attire: Thermal base layer, windproof outer layer, winter trail running shoes (spikes/studs recommended for packed ice), gloves, and beanie.
  • Swimsuit (mandatory in public mixed saunas) and flip-flops or neoprene swim socks/booties for walking on frozen piers.
  • Two towels (one for the sauna bench/drying off during cycles, one fresh towel for after your final shower).
  • Warm post-run change of clothes (thick wool socks, insulated parka).
  • Water bottle and optional woolen sauna hat to protect your head from intense steam.

Budget

  • Trail Access & Lake Ice Hole: Free
  • Smoke Sauna Wristband (includes electric saunas): €13.00 for adults (€8.00 concessions/youth)
  • Electric Sauna Only (alternative): €6.50 for adults
  • Locker / Changing Facilities: Included with sauna admission
  • Café Lunch / Warm Drink: €10.00–€18.00
  • Total Estimated Cost: ~€15.00–€31.00 per person

Tips & Accessibility

  • Ice Safety: Never dive headfirst into the ice hole. Hold firmly to the handrails when entering and exiting, as steps can ice up quickly.
  • Breathing: Control the initial cold-shock reflex by exhaling slowly as you submerge your body up to the chest.
  • Footwear: Wearing neoprene booties significantly improves traction and keeps toes from sticking to sub-zero surfaces.
  • Accessibility: Paved and well-maintained accessible paths run around parts of Lake Kuusijärvi; accessible changing rooms and sauna options (Havu smoke sauna) are available on-site.

Backup Plan

If weather conditions involve extreme blizzards or severe black ice making the trail run hazardous, switch to an indoor workout session at the indoor gym facilities nearby, or swap the run for an easy brisk walk along the cleared lakeside loop path before heading straight into the indoor electric and outdoor smoke saunas.
