Rajasthani Miniature Painting Masterclass
It offers a rare, meditative window into royal court artistry where you master micro-brushwork and natural stone pigments under the guidance of traditional artisans.
Overview
Rajasthani miniature painting is a centuries-old courtly tradition renowned for microscopic precision, vivid mineral pigments, and rich storytelling. In this hands-on masterclass, you step inside a traditional atelier to learn the intricacies of Mewar and Jaipur school techniques. Working on handmade wasli paper or silk with ultra-fine brushes—traditionally crafted from single squirrel hairs—you will grind natural pigments, execute delicate line work, and create your own miniature motif to take home.
Step-by-step Plan
- Morning Studio Arrival & Orientation (09:30 AM – 10:00 AM): Arrive at the artisan studio. Meet the master painter, explore archival pieces, and learn about the history of royal patronage and stylistic differences across Rajasthan's painting schools.
- Material Preparation & Pigment Grinding (10:00 AM – 10:45 AM): Discover how pigments are extracted from semi-precious stones (such as lapis lazuli and malachite), minerals, and plant dyes. Practice grinding and mixing colors with natural gum arabic in small sea shells.
- Base Preparation & Brush Control Drills (10:45 AM – 11:30 AM): Burnish a sheet of treated wasli paper using an agate stone to achieve a glass-smooth surface. Practice holding the micro-brush and drawing hairline strokes and traditional border motifs.
- Outlining & Color Layering (11:30 AM – 01:00 PM): Transfer your chosen traditional stencil or freehand sketch—such as a royal elephant, peacock, or floral medallion—onto your paper. Lay down opaque flat color washes and begin building tonal depth.
- Intricate Detailing & Final Burnish (01:00 PM – 02:00 PM): Add micro-shading (pardaz), fine gold foil or metallic accents, and delicate outlines. Conclude with a final protective seal and burnishing before mounting your work in a protective folder.

- A stiff cardboard folder or document sleeve (A4 size) to safely carry home your damp or delicate painting.
- Comfortable, loose clothing suitable for sitting on cushioned floor seating (baithak style).
- A notebook and pen for recording pigment recipes and brush care techniques.
Budget
- Masterclass Workshop Fee: ₹1,500 – ₹3,500 per person (covers master artisan guidance, all pigments, brushes, and treated paper).
- Optional Masterpiece Purchase / Extra Art Supplies: ₹1,000 – ₹5,000 (if purchasing studio-made brushes, mineral pigment kits, or framed artisan artwork).

Tips & Accessibility
- Hand Steadiness: Miniature painting requires stillness; rest your painting wrist firmly against the drawing board or table to steady your hand while lining.
- Studio Seating: Most traditional ateliers conduct sessions seated on floor mats with low desks; request a chair and standard desk in advance if you have mobility or back concerns.
- Lighting: Book a morning slot to make the best use of bright, natural daylight streaming into the workspace.
Backup Plan
If a scheduled in-person studio masterclass is fully booked or unavailable, visit the royal miniature art collections inside local palace museums or state art galleries (such as Udaipur's City Palace Museum or Jaipur's City Palace) for a self-guided visual study, followed by picking up a DIY miniature painting kit and handmade wasli paper from a local heritage handicraft bazaar.
